Ironmongers Day: why is it celebrated today, September 3, in Argentina?

Like every year, this September 3, the country celebrates Ironmongers Day, a date in commemoration of a historical milestone for workers in the sector, which occurred in 1905.
With more than 100 years of history, merchants offer everything from construction and fumigation materials to cleaning, electricity and maintenance items, among others. But, in addition, hardware stores are a reference for consultation by Argentine households. According to data from the Chamber of Hardware and Related Stores of the Argentine Republic (CAFARA), by 2023 there were more than 15 thousand hardware stores, that is, about one for every 3 thousand inhabitants. Of these, 80% were dedicated to sales for the final consumer, while the remaining worked with industrial trade. "The hardware store is not a mere seller who acts as a link between the consumer and the product. Being a hardware store is a job that is transmitted from generation to generation and that requires, in addition to constant training, knowing the particular needs of the residents of the neighborhood where the store is located, becoming a coach and trusted advisor," said Sergio Angiulli, president of the organization.
