Sustainable transition | FAIMA launched the first Institute of Wood Construction in Argentina

2026-05-27
In a strategic decision to reactivate the forestry industry, the future of sustainable architecture and the development of the bioeconomy in the country, the Argentine Federation of the Wood and Related Industries (FAIMA) made official the creation of the Institute of Wood Construction (ICM). It is the first organization of its kind in Argentina, specifically designed to position the forest resource as a competitive, cutting-edge and carbon-neutral material in the face of the global challenges of mitigating the extreme effects of climate change.
The ICM arises as an initiative supported and promoted by the 28 sectoral chambers that make up the federation at the national level. Its financing will be covered directly by FAIMA and its executive coordination will be in charge of a technical professional of recognized prestige in the forest-industrial and architectural field, guaranteeing a deployment with a strong federal imprint. An institutional bridge between industry and real estate development The central purpose of the institute is to break the historical isolation of the primary chain and connect the potential of local sawmills with the demand of civil construction, both public and private. To achieve this, the ICM will deploy a direct linkage agenda that will unite the following actors: • Sector Public: National and provincial ministries, aimed at updating regulations for social housing and public works. • Financing: Multilateral credit organizations and real estate developers to promote medium and high-rise projects. • Academia and professionals: Universities, research institutes, professional associations and architecture studios to renew study plans and construction design. The creation of the ICM represents a qualitative leap for our industry. It is not just about promoting a material, but about transforming the Argentine construction matrix towards a more efficient and sustainable model, where wood is the protagonist, reported FAIMA, through a press report. Technical standardization and professional training The institutes operational plan will focus on breaking down the regulatory and cultural barriers that limit the use of wood in the traditional construction market. The ICM will assume an active role in the technical discussion tables for updating building codes and safety regulations, facilitating the approval of projects based on industrialized systems and engineered wood. Likewise, in direct collaboration with the FAIMA Architecture team, the institute will become a dissemination and research center that will promote the standardization of local materials - such as pine and eucalyptus from the NEA basins -. Through professional training and certification programs aimed at builders, engineers and architects, the ICM seeks to accelerate the adoption of efficient methods that reduce construction times, improve thermal insulation and energize a sector with a high capacity to generate added value and qualified employment in all Argentine provinces.
