In a context in which architecture and urban planning seek to reduce the environmental footprint of cities and rethink the materials with which they are built, wood is consolidated worldwide as one of the key resources for the development of sustainable buildings. In this framework, the Argentine Federation of the Wood and Related Industries (FAIMA) announced a new edition of the Diploma in Design and Construction with Wood, which will be taught together with the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning of the National University of La Matanza (UNLaM).
The academic proposal is aimed at architects, engineers and professionals with related careers, with the aim of training specialists capable of designing and developing construction projects using wood under technical, environmental and energy efficiency criteria. The course will have a total duration of 120 hours, will take place between April and October, and will combine virtual classes with face-to-face sessions, especially aimed at the development of the final project workshop. A global trend that is gaining spaceNatural wood has become one of the most used construction materials in countries such as Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Canada and the United States, both for its structural properties and for its thermal and energy efficiency. In addition to being a renewable and recyclable resource, it allows storing carbon and reducing the environmental footprint of buildings, a characteristic that is increasingly valued in the face of the challenges of climate change. International reports point out that the use of biological materials in construction – such as wood – could contribute significantly to reducing the sectors emissions towards the middle of the century. In this sense, FAIMA emphasizes that “construction with wood is not just a technique: it is a paradigm shift in architecture”, as it allows the development of more efficient, sustainable buildings aligned with new environmental demands.Technical training and architectural projectThe academic program of the diploma is organized in eight modules, which address everything from knowledge of the forest resource and the properties of wood to structural design, construction systems and sustainability criteria applied to architecture. The training also includes a design workshop, in which participants must develop a complete architectural project using wood as the main material, integrating the knowledge acquired during the course. The teaching staff is made up of sector specialists, including the architect Vicente Mazzitelli, who serves as director of the diploma, along with professionals and technicians linked to the development of wood construction in Argentina.Professionals interested in accessing the half-scholarships must send their curriculum vitae and a letter of motivation, explaining the reasons why they are requesting financial support. The evaluation and allocation of the scholarships will be in charge of FAIMA. Registration will remain open until March 23, while the start of the course is scheduled for April. With this initiative, FAIMA and the National University of La Matanza seek to promote the training of professionals specialized in the use of wood in architecture, a field that is gaining prominence in the world and is also beginning to consolidate itself in Argentine construction development.
