En columna de opinión, el presidente de la Corporación Chilena de la Madeira (Corma), Juan José Ugarte, expresa su preocupación por la falta de un debate necesario en el país sobre la reducción de los bosques cultivados en el país desde 2012 y las consecuencias de al no reforestar las hectáreas afectadas por los megaincendios, quedando más de 150.000 hectáreas sin cobertura vegetal y erosionadas. “Como resultado, no estamos cumpliendo con las metas comprometidas en la estrategia nacional para enfrentar el cambio climático”.
Desde el mundo de la madera nos preocupa lo que está pasando con la reducción de bosques en nuestro país. Desde 2012, Chile dejó de plantar bosques productivos.
Y la tarea de reforestar las hectáreas afectadas por los megaincendios de 2017 y 2023, ha sido imposible de acometer para las pymes, dejando como resultado más de 150.000 hectáreas sin cobertura vegetal y erosionadas.
Como resultado, no estamos cumpliendo con las metas comprometidas en la estrategia nacional para enfrentar el cambio climático: plantar 60.000 ha de bosque nuevo, gestionar 60.000 ha. de bosque nativo para aumentar su capacidad de captura, apoyarnos en un plan de manejo a escala paisajística de 1 millón de hectáreas y reducir en un 25% los daños causados por los incendios, vamos en la dirección contraria.
El balance de emisión de Gases de Efecto Invernadero en Chile muestra que cada año estamos arrojando a la atmósfera alrededor de 56 millones de toneladas de CO2eq. -generada en su mayoría por la quema de combustibles fósiles- algo que no ha podido resistir las masas de bosques, que han sido diezmadas por los incendios y la deforestación.
La tarea de reducir esa brecha entre emisiones y capturarla se realiza en nuestro país y en el mundo entero en los bosques, reconocida como la única manera de alcanzar la meta de manera oportuna y eficiente.
¿Seremos capaces de organizarnos entre los diferentes actores para que, con base en la evidencia científica, podamos abordar una política de largo plazo e impulsar esta urgente agenda forestal?
